A Turkish Delight

After a stressful week back in seminars, myself and a few friends headed off to one of our favourite lunch spots in Norwich- The Workshop. An independent cafe, The Workshop serves up traditional Turkish dishes at very reasonable prices. Dimmed lighting, interesting artwork, shelves filled with books and board games, as well as friendly staff, add to the relaxed and arty atmosphere.
I had my all-time favourite- baked eggs, halloumi, yogurt, salsa, Turkish spices and green chillies (on the side for me as I’m a whimp). The salty fried halloumi blends perfectly with the runny golden eggs, all served on top of a piece of thin crisp ciabatta, perfect for soaking up the soft yolk. The yogurt and spices add a little extra Turkish zest. I should really make the most of the other unique treats on offer but I seem to be stuck in a bit of a rut! The baked eggs are just too good.

My friends were more adventurous and went for a sweet potato, feta, and pomegranate salad and a special hummus dip mixed with Turkish herbs, olives, and pine nuts.

To drink I had a fresh blood orange juice and later a latte- their coffee is amazing. They use a special bean which is sweetened so you don’t need to add sugar.

If you fancy a sweet treat afterwards (I’m always too full), they have a selection of Turkish sweets on offer that always look temptingly sticky and syrupy. My friend chose to have a pistachio hot chocolate topped with mountains of fresh whipped cream. It was honestly one of the most delicious things I have ever tasted- the chocolate was thick and rich with little bits of pistachio hidden inside.

The Workshop is one of the city’s best kept secrets, from the outside you wouldn’t even know it was a cafe, but somehow it is always full. Be warned that they sometimes run out of food so be sure to get their early! If you’re going on a weekend you have to try their Spanish fry up (not very Turkish I know), which is served to your table in a sizzling frying pan with potatoes, peppers, eggs and chorizo.

The Workshop is located towards the end of Earlham Road and is open until 11pm daily. They often have live music in the evening.
